Leader and affiliation : Emmanuelle Cecchi, INRS
Contact : [email protected]
Description : The region of Thetford Mines have grown and developed around the mining of the White Gold, name given in the 19th century to chrysotile (one of the minerals also referred to as asbestos). Although all mines are stopped nowadays, the city and the surrounding landscapes still bear witness of this period.
This visit will not only uncover the mining history but also the impacts of the exploitation on the development of the cities and the daily life of the people at this time. This excursion, organized in cooperation with the Musée Minéralogique et Minier de Thetford Mines, will include a tour of the Museum, a historic tour of the city as well as a tour of ancient sites.
